Checking in at Cape Weligama, Sri Lanka

Having experienced the gorgeous tea country of the Ceylon Tea Trails (see our review here), the hubby and I checked into Cape Weligama, a new resort near Galle on the south coast of Sri Lanka. The warmer weather, blue skies and vast Indian ocean views offered a completely different landscape from the lush green hillsides of the tea plantations we had spent the last few days surrounded by; the perfect ending to our Sri Lankan escapade.

The resort is run by Resplendent Ceylon, the same group behind Ceylon Tea Trails, both hotels being the only Relais et Chateau properties in Sri Lanka. 

The accommodation at Cape Weligama is modern, spacious and private. There are clusters of two to three free-standing villas sharing a 15 metre infinity edge pool, and each "cluster" is named after a different scientist/philosopher. We were booked into a "Premier Residence" in the Ernst Haeckel cluster.

The Premier Residence is a generous 180 square metres in size, with indoor and outdoor living rooms, separate bedroom and a huge bathroom. We adored the free-standing egg-shaped bath for soaking in whilst enjoying the ocean views, and absolutely loved the private steam room with shower.

Each room comes with butler service, and our butler Rasika made us feel welcome and settled on arrival. I thought the handwritten note, cookies and towel elephant on the bed were all nice touches, and made us feel that much more special. 

The resort has a number of dining options, including a casual Sri Lankan outdoor eatery called "Kumbuk". Unfortunately the restaurant had to close for dinner during our stay due to inclement weather, so we only sampled the Main Restaurant and the De Mauny (seafood) Restaurant. Although we were given some options for local dishes at the Main Restaurant, overall I felt the cuisine had been better at the Ceylon Tea Trails (including the scrumptious high tea!).

Our two disappointments on the food front were: (1) that we were unable to try any Sri Lankan mud crab! (We think the majority have been exported to Singapore - the irony) and (2) that we were unable to sample any of the "white tips" Dilmah tea during our stay (it seemed to be permanently out of stock) and had to purchase some to try at the airport on our way home.

Our highlight dining experience was the private dinner arranged at our villa. Our butler did a stellar job of creating an intimate dining atmosphere, and the pace of the service was impeccable. 

We liked being able to dine as we pleased in the privacy of our room, and made use of the flat screen television, which came with a "Netflix"-like selection of movies for guests to enjoy.

With day trips to Galle and Mirissa, body surfing lessons and hanging out by the magnificent crescent shaped main infinity pool, time passed quickly during our stay at Cape Weligama. After a relaxing three days, it was with great reluctance that I had to leave this spot of paradise.

  1. Resplendent Ceylon offers packages if you combine a stay at Cape Weligama with a stay at Ceylon Tea Trails, and the best value option is to travel during the low (rainy) season as rates drop dramatically.
  2. Indulge in a private sea plane transfer between Ceylon Tea Trails and Cape Weligama if you can. Not only will you save valuable travel time (it is approximately a 5 hour drive) but you will also get a spectacular view of the Sri Lankan coastline.
